Perseveration

Perseveration:  Describes the uncontrollable repetition of a word, phrase, or gesture due to an organic mental illness. Eating disorder patients often suffer with this symptom, characterized by entering or continuing a train of thought that is narrowly focused; or being unable to change planes of thinking. Also see set-shifting.  This suggests a disability in abstract reasoning, consistent with neurobiological understandings of eating disorders. This symptom often improves over time with sustained renutrition and brain recovery, but in some cases additional therapeutic interventions are needed.
