Body Fat Percentage: A measurement of body tissue proportions, assessing the ratio of lean mass and adipose tissue. Body composition - the way a body is made up - is sometimes described as fat mass and fat free mass. The fat mass is the proportion of the body made up of fat, whilst the fat free mass is the remaining parts of the body. This includes water, muscle, bone, organs and connective tissue. On some occasions a measurement of fat mass is used in assessing whether someone is at a physically healthy weight. Body fat percentage however varies between genders and individuals. Body composition can be assessed in several ways such as DEXA scans (Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry), hydrostatic weighing and bioelectrical impedance.
