Bradycardia

Bradycardia refers to slow heart rate, typically fewer than 50- 60 beats per minute. Bradycardia is a common but serious complication in patients with eating disorders. There are multiple causes: In malnutrition damage to the heart muscle can slow the heart rate as the heart struggles and tries to conserve energy,  electrolyte disturbances secondary to purging (self-induced vomiting, use of laxatives and/or diuretics) can also cause the heart rate to slow.  Bradycardia is a common reason for hospitalisation in eating disorders to allow for medical stabilisation.    See Medical testing protocols used to diagnose bradycardia are reviewed here.
