Carbohydrates ("carbs")

Carbohydrates ("carbs"): One of three macronutrients, along with proteins and fats, that provide the body with essential energy. All of the tissues and cells in the body require carbohydrates for glucose/energy. Insufficient carb intake, either from restriction or purging, results in muscle tissue being broken down and used as energy. Chronic deficiencies can contribute to increased risk for osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
