Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) also known as myalgic encephalitis (ME) is a disabling and complex illness characterised by overwhelming fatigue such that normal activities can no longer be undertaken and rest does not improve the fatigue. The cause of the illness is unclear although some people develop the illness after certain viral infections.  There are a large number of clinically defined, frequently treatable illnesses that can result in fatigue, including eating disorders. Diagnosis of any of these conditions would exclude a definition of CFS/ME unless the condition has been treated sufficiently and no longer explains the fatigue and other symptoms.
