Electrolyte imbalance/Disturbances (also see Refeeding Syndrome): A potential consequence of self-induced vomiting, diuretic abuse and/or laxative abuse in patients with eating disorders. Two main types of electrolyte disturbances are: (1) Hypokalemia: low potassium and (2) alkalosis: high blood alkaline levels. Either of these can lead to serious cardiac arrhythmias, seizures and/or muscle spasms.
