Electrolytes

Electrolytes: Any ionic solution in the body that behave as an electrically conductive medium. Electrolyte balance is essential for normal functioning of cells and organs. Balance is impacted by eating disorder symptoms such as purging, abuse of laxatives and diuretics. A continuum of electrolyte disturbances can occur secondary to malnutrition and engagement in eating disorder symptoms, as well as during the process of refeeding (see refeeding syndrome). Electrolytes that are most commonly impacted by the eating disorder include sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphate, sulfate, magnesium and bicarbonate.
