Fluid loading/Water loading

Anorexic patients may try to alter their weight readings to disguise the effects of their eating disorder. Methods include hiding coins, sand, or even athletic weights under their clothing. Another tactic is excessive drinking of water, or water loading, prior to getting weighed. Water loading can lead to serum electrolyte imbalance and cardiac arrest. Treatment providers may require patients to wear minimal clothing for weigh-ins, and periodically monitor urine specific gravity to detect water loading. See weight manipulation.
