Hypophosphatemia: Low phosphate level. Phosphate is critical for many cellular processes. It is one of the major components of the skeleton, providing mineral strength to bones. In treatment of anorexia nervosa, patients are given oral phosphate at the beginning of a refeeding schedule to prevent refeeding syndrome. Acute severe hypophosphatemia can lead to widespread organ dysfunction.
