Ipecac Syrup is an over-the-counter emetic; it induces vomiting by both gastric irritation and central stimulation
of the chemoreceptor trigger zone. The intended use is to induce vomiting in
the early management of certain oral poisonings; individuals with eating
disorders abuse it in attempts to induce vomiting when otherwise
"unsuccessful". Toxicity can result from overuse and overdose.
adverse effects include: myopathy, muscle weakness and pain, stiffness,
hypotention and severe cardiac complications resulting in death. Abusers of
Ipecac are given an EKG immediately to assess cardiac functioning.
