Metabolic Rate

Metabolic Rate (also Basal Metabolic Rate/BMR/ Resting Energy Expenditure/REE: the rate at which the body burns calories at rest. During starvation, BMR decreases to conserve energy, thereby sustaining life.  BMR fluctuates and tends to increase during renutrition, as energy requirements increase to meet the demands of the healing process itself.  Treatment providers manage caloric intake during renutrition to maintain the progression toward healthy weight, often increasing total daily intake until normal physiologic balance -- also called the "natural setpoint"-- is reached.
