Grieving an eating disorder

An eating disorders sufferer may go through stages of grief during the recovery process not unlike those experienced when a loved one dies. When sick for a significant period of time individuals question their ability to create a life without their eating disorder (see anorexic identity). The process of letting go and moving forward in recovery consists of stages -- Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance -- and family members as well as patients may go through these stages along the road to recovery.
