Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a short-term focal psychotherapy, developed in the late 1960's for the treatment of clinical depression. It is premised on the theory that interpersonal difficulties contribute to the onset and maintenance of depression, and that their resolution will promote recovery. It has predominately been applied to treatment of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, and focuses on interpersonal difficulties rather than behavioral aspects of disordered eating.
