In clinical terms, there are only three types kinds of eating disorders defined under the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV): anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS). In addition, there is a wide range of eating disturbances that may be associated with, or have elements in common with these classified eating disorders. An APA workgroup is currently debating whether the next edition, DSM-V, should expand the category to include Binge Eating Disorder, Purging Disorder, Night Eating Syndrome and Obesity. It is also examining criteria provided to categorize feeding and eating disorders of infancy and early childhood such as Pica, Rumination Disorder, and Feeding Disorder of Infancy or Early Childhood.
