Marasmus

Marasmus is a form of starvation that occurs when daily intake lacks adequate calories. It is caused by an overall nutritional deficiency, but protein and energy deficiencies in particular. Symptoms include: muscle wasting to fuel the body with energy, slowed growth rates that can have long term effects on mental and physical development and puffy, swollen appearance secondary to severe edema (water retention).
