Obesity is defined by the CDC as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more in adults. The BMI range varies for children depending on where they are on the age-height growth curve. While obesity is statistically linked to
a variety of health problems, there is growing controversy about whether a causal relationship exists. Many other factors, such as lifestyle habits, socio-economic status, stress from anti-fat prejudice and discrimination, repeated weight loss attempts and weight cycling, may play a prominent role in the relationship between BMI and health. Obesity is sometimes mistaken for an eating disorder. However, having a BMI of 30 or more does not convey information about a person's eating behaviors or mental health.
